Laura Freeman is the Principal of Sugar Mill Primary School. Freeman grew up in Baton Rouge and moved to Ascension Parish in 2002. Since starting her teaching career in her hometown, Freeman has gone on to teach throughout Ascension's schools. Her experience includes Galvez Primary, Central Primary, Sorrento Primary, and Donaldsonville Primary. Freeman has also worked as a mentor teacher, master teacher, and, most recently, as assistant principal of Sugar Mill Primary.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Southeastern Louisiana University. 

“I am honored to take on this opportunity. I truly believe in Sugar Mill; I believe in our students; I believe in our teachers; and I will work hard to do what's best for our students," said Freeman. "As the principal, I plan to follow as much as I lead and learn as much as I teach. I will work hard to keep Sugar Mill Primary an awesome place to be." 

Katelyn Keowen is the assistant principal at Sugar Mill Primary. Originally from Livingston Parish, Keowen is a graduate of Denham Springs High School. With 12 years of experience in education, Keowen has truly dedicated herself to the field. She spent nine years teaching high school English before transitioning to a role as an instructional coach at Prairieville Middle School for two years. Most recently, she gained valuable experience as an administrative intern at Prairieville Primary and St. Amant High schools. Keowen is not only passionate about education but also deeply committed to the success and well-being of students.

She holds a bachelor's degree in secondary education and a master's degree in educational leadership, both earned from Southeastern Louisiana University. 

“I'm filled with gratitude and anticipation as I embark on this journey to serve the students, staff, and community of Sugar Mill Primary,” said Keowen. “My time in Ascension has been enriched by the mentorship of exceptional administrators, and I'm eager to apply the invaluable lessons I've learned in my new role as Assistant Principal. Every effort we make is dedicated to the growth and achievement of our students, and I consider it a true privilege to be entrusted with this important work.”
